Predator Control, Vicarious Liability and Rodenticide Courses

The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust - March dates for Scottish training courses

The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust in Scotland has announced the dates for a number of important courses on predator control, vicarious liability and rodenticide training.

Crow control and vicarious liability

Relevant to landowners, managers and keepers, this course advises on the measures required to show all due diligence has been exercised to prevent malpractice. The course also includes a detailed, practical session on legal and best practice aspects of Larsen traps, Larsen ‘mates’ and multi-catch crow cages – of particular relevance following the issue of new General Licenses for 2017. There is a written test and GWCT certificates will be awarded.

Tunnel trapping

The course addresses all legal aspects and best practice for humane tunnel trapping, and includes an outside practical demonstration. Attention is given to the law, trap preparation, tunnel design, non-target avoidance, site selection, and developments within the Spring Traps Approval Order. There is a short written test with GWCT certificates awarded.

Rodenticide training

This is a half-day course that culminates in certification allowing gamekeepers, farmers and landowners to continue to control rats in open country by purchasing and using professional rodenticides. Without certification, practitioners are restricted to the use of amateur pack rodenticides only, or relying on traps, shooting or terriers unless they hold another qualification to use aluminium phosphide gas.

The course is approved on behalf of HSE, meeting their requirements for best practice and reducing the risk of rodenticide residues getting into non-target wildlife.  The fee covers the training, course literature, an online exam and, if successful, appropriate certification for the purchase and use of professional rodenticides.
