An outbreak of phytophthora ramorum on Mull prompted a meeting between landowners and Forestry Commission Scotland on the island on Tuesday.
Senior Policy Officer, Land Use and Environment, Anne Gray attended the meeting along with five Scottish Land & Estates' members based on the island. The meeting helped clarify Scotland's current action plan for dealing with the fungal infection which can kill many tree species, but which is particularly problematic in larch and rhododendron because it throws out spores when it infects these species, thus contributing to spread. The owners though remain concerned about the high costs and ongoing work involved in removing rhoddies which is disproportionately falling to them. We will continue to support their case at a number of levels.
