The Scottish Crofting Federation Annual Gathering was held at Applecross on 10 /11 March. The theme of this year’s conference was Crofting’s place in Europe and included a number of sessions led by speakers from the EU with experience of small scale agriculture. Scottish Government were well represented with Brexit Minister Mike Russell and Crofting Minister Fergus Ewing in attendance together with senior civil servants. Mr Ewing announced a further £600k for the Croft House Grant Scheme and referred to the Government’s aim to produce a new Bill before the end of the Parliament. He made it clear that he wanted to take a collaborative approach in developing new legislation, “he wanted to ‘re-people’ the Highlands, not provide a home for Lynx” He said he hoped the recent sad chapter in the history of Crofting would be put behind and he looked forward to a happier future.
