Beaver Stakeholder Meeting

Earlier this week SNH held a meeting with approximately 15 stakeholders to provide an update on work following the Cabinet Secretary’s announcement in November last year on the future of beavers in Scotland.

As reported previously, in recent months SNH have been in dialogue with Scottish Government and have been commissioned to prepare the Habitat Regulation Assessment and the Strategic Environmental Assessment. Work on these is progressing. In addition, a repeat beaver survey of the Tay catchment has recently been commissioned and the work contracted to University of Exeter.

Good progress is being made with the survey work, which I expected to be completed by the start of June with results published in late autumn/early winter.

The meeting also signified the commencement of work with stakeholders on the development of guidance for licencing arrangements in relation to managing the impacts of beaver in Scotland. SNH are currently working on a draft of this, which will be shared with stakeholders for comment. Over the next few weeks Scottish Land & Estates plans to reform a Scottish Beaver Working Group to provide input into and comment on this document. Another key piece of work being undertaken by SNH is the trailing of different mitigation techniques. SNH are keen to hear from landowners and land managers who would be interested in taking part in land management trials. Outcomes of these trails will be used to develop a fit for purpose management framework for the species.
