Zero Waste Scotland – Litter Prevention Action Plans

Earlier this week we met with Project Manager Jamie Fry of Zero Waste Scotland to discuss next steps in promoting the Care for the Countryside campaign and to discuss a new piece of work Zero Waste Scotland is currently undertaking on the development of Litter Prevention Action Plans.

Zero Waste Scotland is currently working with a number of stakeholders to develop a model across local authority regions in Scotland which firmly puts the focus on prevention of litter and flytipping. This very much involves a partnership approach to the issue, requiring stakeholders across sectors tackling the sources of the issue and helping change behaviours, and working in a more coordinated way.

Initial work has concentrated on Local Authorities to embed the idea across departments and help identify key organisations who could contribute to litter prevention locally. Key organisations will be asked to produce their own Litter Prevention Action Plan incorporating the three main strands in the National Litter Strategy (Information, Infrastructure and Enforcement). These in turn will feed into a Community Litter Prevention Action Plan in each engaged Local Authority area, helping to identify and capitalise on:

  • Coordinated effort;
  • Potential partnerships;
  • Press and PR opportunities;
  • Sharing of best practice; and
  • Gap analysis in terms of litter/flytipping issues, key audiences/stakeholders etc.
