Crofting Consultation Response

Scottish Land & Estates submitted a response to the Scottish Government’s consultation on the future of crofting law. We have been engaged with the Bill Team for some time now through the stakeholder groups and hosting them at committee meetings and to a crofting estate.

SLE believes this opportunity must be taken to simplify and modernise crofting law. Simply ‘tinkering’ with the technicalities will make the current legislation more straightforward but will not be the required catalyst for significant change. Alongside legislative change there is the need for policy and cultural change.

The policy aims for crofting mirror those of wider rural development. Sight of this bigger picture must not be lost when changes to the current law and policies are considered. The Bill Team began their work asking the big questions and we have encouraged this outcome based approached in our consultation response.
