In the next in our series of Next Generation events, Bertie Troughton invites members to Atholl Estates where his own experience with his family’s generational investment in timber provides a platform to discuss succession amidst the impressive backdrop of Blair Castle and the promise of Afternoon Tea.
Atholl Estates woodlands cover some 10,700 acres of land. In forestry circles they are well known as being some of the first commercial plantings carried out in this country, dating back to the early 18th century. The Dukes of Atholl established increasingly large areas of European larch and Norway spruce over what was a very open and treeless landscape around Dunkeld and Blair Atholl. The fourth Duke was so famed for his efforts that he was known as ‘the Planting Duke’. Fast forward to 2026 and a new generation is also getting to grips with the risk in forecasting demand over generational timescales.
Trusting in Trees is a Walk & Talk event at Atholl Estate which will share with our NEXTGEN members the current motivation, aspiration and planning of forestry and woodland across the estate. Topics include continuous cover strategy, deer management, the carbon market and alongside James Jones & Sons Ltd, the future timber market.
This event is kindly sponsored by James Jones & Sons Ltd, a 5th generation family business and one of the UK’s largest and most progressive timber processing companies with core activities in timber harvesting, sawmilling, pallets & packaging, and distribution.
Other information: This event will take place outdoors and will involve a small amount of walking so please bring suitable clothing and footwear.
The day will culminate in a traditional Afternoon Tea at Blair Castle, kindly supported by James Jones & Sons Ltd.
