Auchlyne & Suie Estate is a mixed farming estate, predominantly livestock on the upland hill with an interest in red deer and woodland creation over the 2000+ Ha.

In 2015 the family became aware of beaver activity on the River Dochart, being an expansion out of the lower Tay river system.  Over the following eight years the beaver group have established and owner Nicola Colquhoun can provide a firsthand account of the relationship between the beaver activity, land management and the experience of working with NatureScot.

Scottish Land & Estates featured Nicola Colquhoun and her family estate in our Spring 2023 LandBusiness with a focus on community engagement. At this Walk & Talk, Nicola can provide invaluable insight to living and working alongside beavers and brings the added benefit of her experience from working with Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park Authority.

Members are warmly invited to join us for this Walk & Talk at Ledcharrie Farm on Auchlyne & Suie Estate. Key elements of the programme:

  • SLE Policy Adviser Nadia Flaherty will outline the Scottish Beaver Strategy, potential areas being considered for future translocations - including the Cairngorms National Park – and the licensing process.
  • Discussion with Dr Roisin Campbell-Palmer of The Beaver Trust on beaver science and behaviours.
  • Walk & Talk guided by Nicola Colquhoun onto the nearby watercourse to see beaver activity and lodges.  The walk will require appropriate clothing and footwear (wellies) and will cover approximately ½ mile out and back from the farmyard.  Nicola will share her experience of beaver activity and the impact on her land management activity
  • Roo Campbell of NatureScot will be able to discuss mitigation measures, support and advice available to landowners and how NatureScot have worked with Auchlyne & Suie Estate.
  • Land managers either considering beaver reintroduction or in potential areas of reintroduction will have an invaluable opportunity to meet with other members and key stakeholders to learn and discuss what hosting beavers on their land may look like.

The event is free of charge to SLE members, booking is essential through the SLE website.
