Walk & Talk: National Trust for Scotland Killin/Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve Mountain Woodland Habitat

Woodland Trust Scotland, together with Sarah Watts and National Trust for Scotland will introduce members to mountain woodland, providing an example of this landscape and of upland birchwood and willow scrub first hand, highlighting the work undertaken across Ben Lawers  National Nature Reserve (NNR) to restore altitudinal treeline habitats.

Those present at this event will hear how mountain woodland contributes to ecosystem services, nature-based solutions and biodiversity value, as well as how it interrelates with other upland land uses and restoration projects.

As an exemplar site for montane woodland restoration, Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve (NNR) will be the base for the field visit. This site provides easy accessibility and visibility of over 30 years of pioneering restoration work. There will be an initial reception at the NTS Base in Killin for a short indoor intro session prior to going up the hill.

Meeting and departure point:

National Trust For Scotland, Lynedoch, Main Street, Killin, FK21 8UW

10:00am: Meet at NTS Ranger base in Killin, utilise meeting room for briefing by Sarah Watts and Helen Cole. 

Tea/coffee provided by NTS

Toilet facilities

11:00am: Drive and car share where possible to Ben Lawers car park  (map below) – 15 minutes away and 450m altitude.

11:15am: Walk to mountain woodland area for presentation on the ground (including a lunch stop)

2:00-2:30pm: Return to NTS Killin for wash up and depart.

Please bring suitable outdoor clothing and a packed lunch.
