Leys Estate lies to the north-east of the town of Banchory between the River Dee and Hill of Fare and is around 25km west of Aberdeen.

This unique location has played a pivotal role in the commercial and development opportunities the Estate has embraced over the years. However, Leys Estate and the Burnett family’s long-developed roots in the local environment and community have remained a key focus throughout. This has seen the Estate invest directly in residential, leisure and commercial developments throughout the area. One development which has developed through partnership working, community engagement and commercial opportunities is Woodend at Crathes.

Beginning life as a small farm on the edge of Banchory, the diversification of Woodend at Crathes began in the early 1990s when Leys Estate offered the use of a derelict farm steading and cattle byre as a makeshift rehearsal space for a community play, designed to celebrate the anniversary of 400 years of Crathes Castle and community life in Banchory.

From then the area has flourished to become a community hub for sports, arts and culture on the edge of Banchory. It is now home to The Barn, Buchanan Bistro, Deeside Rugby Football Club, Banchory Christian Fellowship Church, Movement Evolution, Woodend Community Allotments and Woodend Wild Garden.

2023 will mark the next stage in the community’s development as it becomes ‘Woodend at Crathes, A Sustainable Community’.
