What was the motivation?

In the late 1990s, salmon and sea trout stocks in the River Carron collapsed, with rod catches falling to single figures per season. Scientific evidence identified severe winter spates that shifted gravel as being a primary cause of the destuction of the breeding grounds. In response, Bob Kindness launched a stocking programme from a hatchery built on Attadale Estate, initially using wild fish as broodstock. However, the limited number of fish available made this approach unsustainable. To scale up efforts, Bob established a captive broodstock facility at Attadale, raising fish entirely in freshwater. By 2001, this enabled the release of up to 150,000 fry annually, a strategy that proved vital to the river’s recovery.

Rod catch data now shows the 10-year average for salmon and grilse has risen to 246, compared to just 150 before the stocking programme and a mere 16.8 and 6.5 respectively in the decade prior. In some years, returning adults from stocked fish account for over 50% of the catch. This success is particularly significant given that wild salmon in Scotland are now classified as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN. Bob’s work, supported by the River Carron Conservation Association and recent collaboration with UHI Inverness, has contributed to one of the UK’s most comprehensive studies on conservation stocking. The research confirms that fish stocked as eggs or juveniles can survive to adulthood and return to spawn, while also offering best-practice insights, such as using wild-caught broodstock for only one breeding season and favouring autumn fry releases for higher survival. Bob’s meticulous long-term data collection, including DNA analysis and rotary screw trap monitoring, has enabled precise tracking of stocked fish across generations.
