This summer, I have published my third children’s book which explores aspects of rural management in an easily accessible and exciting format for children. Captain Partridge and The Farm Monster’s Feast was launched on Friday 1st July at the Scottish Game Fair and was followed by a book reading on the Sunday of the event. Working with local artists and businesses to produce the book, I do this all voluntarily as I am a great believer in educating youngsters about our rural environment. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust benefits from all proceeds from the sale of the books.
Captain Partridge and the Farm Monsters’ Feast is amplifying positive messages and teaching young readers about issues they may not have been aware of. I have explored how wildlife friendly farming can be integrated into modern land management and wrapped this up in an engaging adventure story. Through detailed description of the various flora and fauna which inhabit our farming landscape and by using terminology and references from nature, I hope the book engenders a deeper understanding and interest in our rural environment amongst our future land managers
I have specifically worked with local artists and businesses to produce this book, with the illustrator being located just 1 mile from my home in Perthshire. The digital photographer, designer and printer all operate win a 50-mile radius from my home and a number of these contributors generously offered their services at a discounted rate as this book is for charity. The book has been printed in Dundee as opposed to a cheaper alternative being sourced overseas. The project has been generously sponsored by a renewable energy firm and overheads have been kept to a minimum with 60% of the contributors being home-based.
Knowing how and why land is managed in a particular way is crucial to the future of our rural economy and in encouraging the next generation to be passionate this sector. This book brings that all to life and has been incredibly well received by adults and children.
