Dumfries House Health and Wellbeing Centre

Nominee Summary

We are a Health and Wellbeing Centre that embraces a holistic approach to health—nurturing mind, body, and overall harmony. The centre’s services are designed to complement existing NHS and Local Authority provisions, addressing gaps in care and offering additional support for individuals managing long-term conditions. Our aim is to empower people to take charge of their own wellbeing and serve as a catalyst for effective self-management.

Overcoming Challenges

The rise in local Covid-19 cases presented significant challenges for both staff and participants at the Health and Wellbeing Centre. However, it also created opportunities to adapt and innovate, with several of our programmes successfully transitioning to online delivery. Regular feedback from participants revealed that sleep difficulties, stress, and anxiety were common concerns requiring further support. In response, we developed and piloted two new programmes—Get Sleepy and Think Yourself Calm. Both were well-received and have since become a core part of our programme offering at the Health and Wellbeing Centre.

Supporting the community

We actively evaluate and measure the impact of all our programmes, using data and evidence to demonstrate the positive difference we are making in people’s lives. Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that every service we deliver is effective, meaningful, and responsive to community needs. The Health and Wellbeing Centre has been designed as a calm, welcoming, and safe space—where individuals feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported. This environment plays a crucial role in fostering trust and encouraging open engagement. Our team works collaboratively—within the organisation and with a range of external partners, including third-sector organisations, independent practitioners, and local businesses—to design and deliver educational, inspiring, and innovative programmes. These partnerships help us to stay relevant, creative, and inclusive in our approach. We are proud to share the real-life stories of participants who have experienced significant personal transformation through our services. Many have generously contributed case studies, offering powerful testimonials that highlight the meaningful impact the Health and Wellbeing Centre has had on their lives, wellbeing, and sense of self.

Ethical/environmental standards

The core values of The King’s Foundation—People, Places, and Planet—are central to how we design and deliver our health and wellbeing programmes. We intentionally incorporate nature wherever possible, recognising its vital role in supporting holistic wellbeing. Many of our sessions take place outdoors, making full use of our natural surroundings, including a dedicated Tai Chi lawn, peaceful nature walks, and a fully functioning herb garden. We work closely with our on-site estate teams to ensure all activities align with our shared ethos. Any external practitioners or partners are carefully selected to ensure they uphold our high ethical and environmental standards. Our buildings are thoughtfully integrated with the landscape, creating spaces that feel connected to nature and foster a sense of calm and harmony. In every aspect of our work, we strive to create a nurturing environment that reflects our commitment to people, the preservation of place, and the protection of the planet.
