With an unwavering commitment to agricultural education and community empowerment, Garvald Farm has become a beacon of inspiration and knowledge, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable farming practices and nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. Through its innovative educational programmes and community engagement initiatives, Garvald Farm has positively impacted countless lives. Garvald is a charity that provides social therapy, creative opportunities and support for people with learning disabilities. In 2019, it will be celebrating its 50th year of operation in Edinburgh.
Farming is a key part of the curriculum at Edinburgh Steiner School, and Garvald Farm has long been an important part of all pupils' learning in this subject. In Year 3, the pupils study a core course in agriculture, which includes a residential visit to the certified biodynamic organic farm in the Borders. Later in the school, Year 9 traditionally begin the new school year with an extended visit of two to three weeks to Garvald, where they undertake a wide range of work and gain a real sense of the day-to-day work of food production, sustainable agriculture and environmental impact.
In March 2023, as part of the main agriculture lesson of class 3, the pupils visited Garvald Home Farm to experience the lambing season. They had previously visited and harvested potatoes, carrots and onions on a biodynamic root day. On this special occasion, the class watched as three lambs were born by teacher Mr Brett and a colleague from the farm, before many of the children cuddled and stroked the young animals. The children then prepared the ground and seeded the soil with grass and barley (taking turns to use a hand plough to give them a taste of unaided farm work), they also enjoyed a tractor ride for a bit of fun under a rainbow!
At the heart of Garvald Farm's mission is a commitment to educating and empowering local communities. Through interactive workshops, farm tours and educational events, the farm provides engaging and informative experiences that connect people to the land and the processes that sustainably produce food. By providing a hands-on approach to learning, Garvald Farm fosters a sense of appreciation, understanding and responsibility for the environment and local food systems. Recognising the importance of skills development, Garvald Farm offers vocational training programmes that equip individuals with practical knowledge and expertise in sustainable farming practices. These programmes provide participants with the necessary tools to pursue careers in agriculture or to start their own sustainable farming ventures. By equipping individuals with relevant skills, Garvald Farm contributes to local economic growth and the viability of rural communities.
Garvald's long-standing relationship with Edinburgh Steiner School demonstrates their commitment and dedication to biodynamic principles. In addition to their hands-on experience of farming, pupils have weekly gardening lessons where they are given the opportunity to tend their own plots and are encouraged to use the fruit, vegetables and herbs they grow and harvest to prepare school meals. This reinforces the teaching of sustainability and a belief in self-reliance. Edinburgh Steiner School has been nourished by this decades-long relationship with Garvald Home Farm, a 200-acre biodynamic working farm just twenty miles from the school gates.
Garvald Farm actively works with local schools and educational establishments, offering bespoke programmes that complement the curriculum and enhance students' understanding of agriculture and the environment. From farm visits to hands-on workshops, the farm provides valuable learning opportunities that instil a passion for sustainable agriculture, spark curiosity and encourage careers in the agricultural sector. By engaging with young people, Garvald Farm nurtures the next generation of informed and environmentally conscious leaders.
Garvald Farm's educational programmes emphasise the principles of sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Through hands-on demonstrations, they show the importance of biodiversity, soil health and organic practices in promoting ecological balance and reducing environmental impact. By empowering people with this knowledge, the farm inspires action towards a more sustainable and resilient future for both rural and urban communities.
Garvald Farm is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment that welcomes people from all backgrounds. They actively engage with marginalised communities to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and actively promote diversity in agriculture. Through their inclusive approach, the farm fosters a sense of belonging, encourages collaboration and creates opportunities for all to participate in and benefit from agricultural education.
Like many educational initiatives, Garvald Farm initially faced limited funding and infrastructure. Overcoming this challenge required ingenuity, creative problem solving and strategic partnerships to secure funding, acquire the necessary equipment and develop the infrastructure required to effectively deliver educational programmes. Engaging the local community, particularly those who may not have had previous exposure to farming or sustainability concepts, was a challenge for Garvald Farm. They had to build trust, demonstrate the value of their programmes and encourage participation from a wide range of community members. This involved active outreach, building relationships with community organisations and adapting programmes to meet the specific needs and interests of the local community.
