Jahama Highland Estates is part of GFG's Lochaber-based aluminium operations. The power stations and aluminium smelters date back to 1895, showcasing an extraordinary example of scale, ambition, and engineering. The rural estate encompasses approximately 115,000 acres, including significant areas like Glen Nevis and other important sites. Amidst the remarkable narrative of the aluminium industry, hydroelectric scheme, and the surrounding estate, one individual's story stands out—Angus MacDonald. Joining the company in 1958 at the age of fifteen, Angus's journey is nothing short of exceptional. At 80 years old, he maintains an unbroken tenure with the company, remaining an active participant in the workforce. His presence is notable, even standing taller than his colleagues.
Angus is characterized by his dedication, kindness, care, and extensive historical knowledge. As a young man, he braved treacherous conditions, often wading through waist-deep snow on a several-mile journey to work, uncertain of a day's labor. Over the past few decades, he has witnessed dramatic transformations in the rural landscape, facing various challenges with confidence and grace. Angus has interacted with numerous recruits, playing a crucial role in supporting young Gillies, land agents, and diverse staff members.
When conversations revolve around the estate, Angus's name inevitably surfaces. His influence has been enduring, imparting wisdom to others across various domains. Irrespective of seniority, Angus possesses a remarkable ability to share valuable advice and insights. Having spent his entire working life in the area, he's become an integral part of the community, much like the surrounding hills.
Angus's accomplishments span numerous areas: crafting thousands of gates, erecting hundreds of miles of fencing, planting millions of trees, and overseeing the sawmill for many years. He's fabricated an assortment of practical equipment, including dog boxes, rod boxes, shelving, and toolboxes, benefiting his colleagues. The wooden planters adorning the smeltery owe their existence to Angus's craftsmanship. More recently, Angus has played a significant role in JHEEP, the Jahama Environmental Scheme, constructing hundreds of bird and bat boxes to be strategically placed around the estate. In May 2023, Angus will be recognized for over 65 years of unbroken service to the estate and for reaching the age of 80.
