Kilchuimen Academy

Nominee Summary

Students at Kilchuimen Academy in Fort Augustus have successfully completed the recently introduced Rural Skills National Progression Award, marking a significant advancement in linking classroom learning with real-world employment prospects in Inverness-shire. Delivered in partnership with Loch Ness Rural Communities, the programme offers practical experience in essential rural skills. As part of their studies, students worked alongside gamekeeping teams at Glendoe and Glenmoriston Estates, taking part in activities such as habitat enhancement, deer management, and gamebird care, providing them with valuable insight into land-based industries.

The preservation of skills

The importance of equipping young people with the skills needed to pursue careers in rural Scotland is so significant. This accredited qualification plays a crucial role in preserving traditional skills before they disappear. It also tackles the increasing issue of young people moving away from rural communities in search of urban employment.

Increasing awareness

The partnership with local estates ensured that students gain industry insight, preparing them for future roles in the rural sector with hands on experience with those that are in those roles now. This programme is part of a broader effort to introduce young people to rewarding careers in rural professions, from gamekeeping to renewable energy, nature conservation, and more.

Ethical/environmental standards

The local community will benefit from having those educated within the community potentially remain.

Overcoming Challenges

Although rural areas cover 98% of Scotland’s landmass, they only account for 17% of the population, highlighting the pressing need to retain young talent within these communities. Projects like this will help to give young people opportunities within which they live.
