At the 2015 Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping were awarded the Scottish Borders Tourism Business of the Year 2015. This award is made for all round excellence together with the contribution to Borders tourism. The business was established in 2013 on the 230 hectare hill farm at Spital Tower, near Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Run by Alan Bailey and his family, it is based around a lovely Edwardian walled garden, restored from dereliction for the purpose.
In the 2015 season, Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping drew over 3,500 new visitors to the Borders. The site comprises of:
• Thirty levelled pitch your own sites within the restored walled garden
• The Hub in a converted agricultural shed
• Four glamping safari tents, fully kitted out and serviced, in remote woodland sites
• A willow bed sewage treatment system
• 20 wild camping sites in the woods on the slopes of Ruberslaw hill, for group and lone camping
The project has brought much needed new jobs to the area, and all positions are filled by local people.
Community engagement is an important part of the campsite’s work. School groups, Duke of Edinburgh Award squads, Church groups giving holidays to underprivileged children, the Interest Link (Hawick) Youth Group, and Boys Brigade have all enjoyed time camping in the Wild Woods, a new experience for many. The Baileys are also promoting a co-operative Community Footpaths Project up to the summit of Ruberslaw, to improve access for customers and the public alike.
Campers are well looked after with provisions of fire pits and wood, tourist information, a shop, well equipped kitchen, facilities with under-floor heating, disabled facilities, WIFI, and a large communal area centred around a huge fireplace. Staff are on hand to make sure everyone has a great camping experience. 2016 will see further improvements to the offering and hopefully the introduction of Equestrianism.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the wider area and the Baileys receive much positive feedback from local pubs and shops regarding increased custom from campers, and the repeat business it brings.
