What makes your nominee stand out?

Treeline Woodlands is a multi-generational, family-run forestry business that combines deep-rooted experience with an innovative, environmentally focused approach. Based at Baddinsgill Farm in the Pentland Hills, Treeline has spent over thirty years delivering bespoke forestry services that harmonise farming, forestry, and environment. What sets us apart is our unique ability to trial and refine sustainable practices on our own land, allowing us to lead by example. Our long-term commitment to biodiversity and stewardship is not just a guiding principle — it's a lived reality, demonstrated through tangible, ongoing improvements in the health of our woods and farmland. We also place a high value on collaboration. Our strong, enduring relationships with suppliers, clients, and stakeholders have been central to shaping a stable and profitable business — one built on trust, shared goals, and mutual benefit.

Supporting the local community

Treeline supports the local economy by working closely with local farmers and landowners, offering a bespoke, end-to-end forestry service. Our comprehensive offering includes grant applications, mapping, budgeting, fencing, ground preparation, planting, beat-up surveys, ongoing maintenance, thinning, and final timber harvesting. We also market the harvested timber to local sawmills and firewood producers, who in turn supply quality products to their own customers. With each forestry cycle spanning over forty years, our work provides long-term stability and career progression for those involved. The longevity of the process allows us to retain and retrain talented local people over time, helping them develop new skills and grow within the industry. From planting teams and machinery operators to hauliers, drivers, and office staff, Treeline creates a broad range of employment opportunities. By prioritising local partnerships and harnessing regional skill sets, we ensure that economic and social benefits stay rooted within the Scottish Borders. Beyond economic contributions, Treeline enhances local wellbeing through the creation and improvement of green spaces. Our woodlands are designed with amenity, landscape, and biodiversity in mind, delivering lasting benefits to local communities. Using innovative harvesting techniques and specialist machinery, we also restore and enrich existing woodlands—turning them into beautiful, diverse habitats that support people, plants, and wildlife alike. This impact is especially visible in high-access public areas such as the John Muir Country Park and Mortonhall Golf Course in Edinburgh, where communities enjoy improved natural spaces as a direct result of our work.

Maintaining high ethical/environmental standards

At Treeline, we believe that our people are at the heart of our business. Maintaining high ethical standards begins with fostering a culture where every individual feels heard, respected, and empowered to speak up. We encourage open dialogue and transparency, which not only supports ethical decision-making internally but also extends to our relationships with clients. By building trust through honesty, integrity, transparency and professional accountability, we ensure that our actions consistently reflect our values and uphold the highest standards of conduct. We embrace modern technology wherever possible to improve our communication and ensure that everyone has up to date information on operations at their fingertips. This helps build long term relationships based on trust and collaborative working. At Treeline, we are committed to maintaining and managing woodlands in a way that supports long-term environmental sustainability. To minimize our ecological impact, we have invested in a range of small, lightweight harvester and forwarders. These specialist machines not only reduce our carbon footprint due to their efficiency but also cause significantly less damage to the woodland environment when compared to traditional methods. By using smaller equipment, we reduce damage to the forest floor, preventing soil compaction and preserving the biodiversity that thrives within these ecosystems.
