Will epitomises the modern Scottish landowner - progressive, innovative, outward-looking and focused not only on improving the sustainability of the estate but also on creating opportunities for other businesses and for the community. he is always willing to engage with politicians and others to raise awareness of the realities of rural land management and business.

Whether he is on social media encouraging people to attend open farm sunday, working with his award winning farm business, chairing the SLE SE region or making long term plans for the restoration of his historic home, he does it with warmth, passion, openness and commitment. he is inspiring and engaging and very insightful. He takes time to research, plan and investigate and always makes decisions on a very informed basis - taking into account the impact on those who work, live and visit the estates and his neighbours. he actively encourages others to be open and visible and is a key member of the South of Scotland Next Generation group - providing peer support to other younger landowners.

He has clearly had an impact on other members of the South of Scotland Next Gen group, as well as others in Midlothian and beyond, particularly providing invaluable support to those who have recently taken on the responsibility of running estates. Preston Hall Farm has been named Arable Farm of the Year for 2022.The award, supported by AHDB and sponsored by SoilEssentials, recognises farms that focus on soil health and make the best use of innovation and technology. They were particularly commended for their role in the Monitor Farm programme - again highlighting the open-mindedness of Will's approach to farm and estate management.

He is always willing to try new things and look at different ways of doing things and gets involved in all aspects of the estate business. despite being very busy on the estate, he has taken on the role of SLE SE Regional Chairman. he is passionate about community involvement and providing opportunities for young people to learn more about farming and wider estate activities. He has supported his farm manager, Bill Gray, in his demanding role as RHASS President - underlining the value Will places on contributing to the sector.
