Zulu Ecosystems

Over the past year, Zulu Ecosystems has worked closely with a landowner in the Cairngorms National Park to lead landscape restoration at scale. 

Through a unique combination of proprietary technology, multidisciplinary expertise and collaborative partnerships, Zulu Ecosystems guided and optimised the future management of these areas. 

In 2024 alone, this approach supported the delivery of 358ha of regeneration in a 600ha mosaic, creating a mosaic of new native woodland, restored peatland, and improved moorland habitat. 

The benefits of this restoration will lead to a more functional and resilient ecosystem, delivering impacts across water regulation, enhanced biodiversity, and more. 

Zulu Ecosystems sought to help the landowner understand how their potential management choices would influence and optimise the co-benefits of ecosystem regeneration, all while securing a resilient and sustainable financial future for the landholding. 

With the support of our team of scientists, ecologists, and consultants, the firm used its platform to balance multiple co-benefits and bring high environmental integrity. 

The end-to-end approach to projects helps optimise the future management of the land through robust monitoring, first principles science, sciencebacked reporting, and continued verification. 

This work also involved working side-by-side with funders and expert advisers in Scottish Forestry and the Cairngorms National Park Authorities' Peatland ACTION programme, as well as local consultants and surveyors such as Botaneaco and Highfield Forestry. 

Local contractors Taiga Upland were integral to delivering work on the ground.

Restoring this connected landscape within the Cairngorms National Park required commitment to a novel approach to land management decision-making – one that would be guided by the integration and interpretation of all available data, supported by long-term relationship building between landowners, managers, contractors, project developers, and more. 

Against challenging weather conditions and over winter in the Cairngorms, the landowners, managers, contractors, and consultants pulled together to execute the plan against tight time pressures. 

The work successfully closed over 100 km of man-made drainage in the peatland areas and included the re-profiling and re-vegetation of bare peat and damming of gullies.

Together, this is set to improve peatland conditions, restore the bog hydrology, and help secure the carbon stored therein. 

In a broader mosaic around this and in larger contiguous areas, Zulu Ecosystems carefully pinpointed areas suitable for the establishment of new native woodland and designed open ground amongst and between those activities will support improved moorland habitat. 

This work helps restore these precious ecosystems to their more natural state, allowing nature to thrive and ensuring resilience into the future. Increasing woodland cover will provide future shelter for herbivores, such as red deer, as well as new moorland fringe habitats to support threatened species like black grouse, plus the multitude of passerine species this habitat supports. 

The nutrient-cycling from new woodland cover alongside related fungal mycorrhizal dynamics will improve soil health and enrich the field layer to further support enhanced diversity. 

Concurrently, the peatland work is set to restore the peatland hydrology: bringing the water table up to levels that can sustain existing peat, nurture new peat formations, and sequester environmental carbon. This will optimise the habitat for the bog specialist plants that would have once dominated these areas, and in turn support the unique fauna allied to them. 

Newly re-vegetated bare areas of peat will reduce direct erosion losses and expand the area of available habitat. 

The benefits of improved hydrology don't stop at the bog habitat. They also help to regulate water by reducing peak flows in connected river systems and reduce the acidity of stream flows, thereby improving freshwater ecology and supporting breeding success amongst the declining salmon family. 

Water flowing through optimised peatland also helps clean up atmospheric pollutants, reducing particulate and dissolved carbon levels. 

Socially, our approach to enhancing the environment through land management actively prioritises local procurement and contracting as much as possible, re-skilling local land workers, bringing new companies into operations, and/or new staff into businesses. 

By providing robust and detailed costing plans and future forecasts, our work helps land managers support a just transition amongst related workforce while creating a net positive future of work in service of nature, climate, and people. 

During the initial scoping, we approached and consulted the broader community. This included liaising with the neighbouring landowning community, community council, and communities of interest, such as the Scottish Mountaineering Council.
