Emma Roddick MSP visits Glenmazeran to see sustainable moorland management in action

Glenmazeran Estate recently welcomed Emma Roddick MSP for a visit to learn more about the practical delivery of sustainable moorland management and its role in supporting biodiversity, rural employment and wildlife conservation. 

Emma Roddick met Murray Wilson, Headkeeper at Glenmazeran, to discuss the day-to-day management of the moorland and the contribution that well-managed upland habitats make to Scotland’s rural environment. Discussions were held on habitat management, species conservation, licensing, wildfire and the importance of balancing environmental, economic and community interests across the Highland landscape.

A key focus of the day was the role that sustainable moorland management can play in supporting a wide range of wildlife, including threatened wader species and birds of prey. Emma had the opportunity to observe and discuss the conservation of raptors, including white-tailed eagles, which are increasingly being seen across the Highlands and are an important part of Scotland’s natural heritage.

Emma Roddick MSP said: “It was a pleasure to visit Glenmazeran and spend time learning more about the work being undertaken to manage this important upland environment. 

"Seeing the estate first-hand provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the realities of sustainable moorland management and the role it can play in maintaining healthy habitats for a wide variety of species.

"I was particularly interested to hear about the estate’s approach to supporting biodiversity and the presence of iconic raptors, including white-tailed eagles. Productive conversations such as these are important in helping us understand how rural land managers, conservation interests and local communities can work together to support Scotland’s natural environment.”

The visit provided an opportunity to share knowledge and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Scotland’s moorlands, while demonstrating the positive contribution that responsible land management can make to habitat conservation, biodiversity and the rural economy.
