Scottish Land & Estates supports police appeal following poisoning of birds of prey in Castle Douglas
Press ReleaseScottish Land & Estates has today backed a Police Scotland appeal for information after two red kites were confirmed to have been poisoned near Castle Douglas.
The first red kite was discovered alongside a wood pigeon—used as poisoned bait—on Castle Douglas Golf Course on Thursday, 10 April 2025. A second red kite was found dead nearby five days later, on Tuesday, 15 April. Both birds were found to have ingested the same highly toxic substance.
Ross Ewing, Director of Moorland at Scottish Land & Estates, said:
“We strongly support Police Scotland’s appeal for information following the poisoning of two red kites in Castle Douglas.
“Incidents such as this are deeply concerning. Poisoning is an illegal and indiscriminate method of killing that poses a serious risk to wildlife, domestic animals, and the public.
“Scottish Land & Estates condemns all forms of wildlife crime and continues to work with partners to ensure those responsible for such acts are held accountable. We urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the investigation.”
