Swift action welcomed following isolated BSE case
Press ReleaseScottish Land & Estates, the rural business organisation, has welcomed the swift response to an isolated case of classical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) confirmed on a farm in Dumfries and Galloway.
Eleanor Kay, Senior Policy Adviser (Agriculture and Climate Change) at Scottish Land & Estates, said:
“The confirmation of a case of classical BSE in Dumfries and Galloway will understandably be concerning for farmers and the wider agricultural sector.
“It is reassuring, however, that this case was identified through routine surveillance, that the animal did not enter the human food chain and that Food Standards Scotland has confirmed there is no risk to human health.
“We welcome the swift and precautionary action taken by the farmer, the Scottish Government and relevant agencies to isolate the case and minimise any potential impact.
“It is important that the investigation into the source of the disease is completed thoroughly and that the industry is kept informed of any significant developments. The affected farming business should also receive all necessary support while the investigation and associated measures continue.
“Following the separate case of bluetongue in recent weeks, it is more devastating news for farming in the region. Both cases underline the importance of effective surveillance and prompt action."
