Walk & Talk: Broadmeadows Estate

Join us on 21 September when Alec Telfer, finalist in the "Enhancing our Environment" category in our 2020 Helping it Happen Awards, will be hosting a Walk & Talk event where members can learn about the projects he has undertaken at Broadmeadows Farm.

Come and see how he has improved the land for biodiversity by creating hedgerows and wildlife corridors, and how forestry is contributing to flood mitigation and water improvement on his land.

Alec will also share his experiences about creating his new legacy woodland - the challenges and the successes.

10.05 - Brief introduction by host Alec Telfer, owner Broadmeadows who will introduce Jeremy Thompson of Forest Direct.

10.30 - Depart for tour in four wheel drive vehicles only

Stop 1 - Discuss previous broadleaved planting scheme 2009, look at Norway spruce planted in current scheme in 2019

Stop 2 - Look at Douglas fir planted in 2019, weed control, growth rates and origin

Stop 3 - Clear fell and restock 2018/19 - contrast restock against new planting, forest road infrastructure grant

Stop 4 - Proposed new path network and grant, view point, design of Scots pine planting

Stop 5 - Broadleaved planting at scale

Stop 6 - Overview of the woodland creation scheme from a good vantage point, design, opportunities and constraints

Stop 7 - Moorland management plan, deer and hare control with no fences

Stop 8 - Native riparian woodland and mixed woodland planting 2009 for the objectives of sporting potential, discussion about Woodland Carbon Code and how it has influenced the design and decision to progress the scheme in the first place

Stop 9 - The future - Roads and Cabins
