In partnership with Kelton Mains, we invite SLE Members to attend a knowledge transfer and information event.
A Walk & Talk on Habitat and Landscape scale restoration will be held at The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) owned Kelton Mains, which is on the Threave Estate, near Castle Douglas. The NTS, with support from the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership and HSBC are working to create a species-rich restored natural landscape.
The aim of the project is to create a restored woodland-wetland ecosystem, self-sustaining and self-adapting to Scotland’s changing climate. The site will be managed not as a site of thirty fields and forested compartments, but as a single landscape, zoned by habitat; wetlands, grasslands and woodlands. The restored landscape will support the evolution of existing habitats and support the regeneration and creation of new habitats to maximise biodiversity.
The Walk and Talk will also be looking at wetland, grassland and woodland restoration. More information will be shared with members very shortly.
This event is free of charge to SLE Members, but booking is essential through the SLE website as places are limited.
The project should be of interest to members keen to increase the Bio-diversity of their farms, perhaps put some poorer land to more varied output, and especially those members expecting that future Agricultural Support Payments will require more environmental input; and wish to see how the NTS have developed along this route.
Further details:
The project is sited in the car-park of Threave Castle (not at Threave House and Gardens). Threave Castle is half a mile off the 75, at the Southern roundabout for Castle-Douglas, and is well signposted.
In the carpark there are toilet facilities, a visitor centre, and plenty of parking.
The site is about 81 hectares (200 acres), well serviced by hard tracks, outdoor footware will be needed in wet weather. It is intended that the meeting will run for about 2 hours. Please note the whole site will not be visited.
Light refreshments will be provided.
