Greenknowe Farm

Berwickshire-based farmer Neil White of Greenknowe Farm runs a 237ha arable business growing winter wheat, winter oilseed rape, winter barley, spring barley, spring beans and spring oats. By improving the organic matter and workability of the soil, Neil has increased his direct drilling rate to 90% over the past seven years and has recently purchased a tracked combine to help him manage his soils post-harvest. The introduction of cover crops and clover leys are two recent cropping changes on the farm, and since 2014 Neil has been using drones as part of his management to enable crop checks, drainage mapping and establishment checks.  Passionate about spreading positive messages about the role productive agriculture has to play in conserving Scotland's countryside, Neil regularly invites industry stakeholders to visit the farm and writes a regular column for Direct Driller magazine.

Greenknowe Farm is at the forefront of sustainable land management. Using precision farming techniques, they have maximised yields while minimising the use of fertiliser, water and energy. By using regenerative farming practices such as cover cropping, rotational grazing and soil health improvement, they have improved soil fertility, reduced erosion and increased biodiversity on their land. Greenknowe Farm's commitment to sustainable land management not only ensures its long-term viability, but also sets a benchmark for environmentally responsible farming practices. At the heart of Greenknowe Farm's success is its use of the latest technology. By utilising innovative tools and equipment such as precision farming systems, drones and IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, they have revolutionised farm management. These technological advances have enabled precise monitoring, real-time data analysis and informed decision-making, resulting in optimised resource allocation, increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Greenknowe Farm's embrace of technology demonstrates their willingness to embrace innovation to improve farming practices.

Adopting new technologies: Adopting new technologies and integrating them into existing farm practices can be a significant challenge. Greenknowe Farm may have faced barriers related to initial investment costs, staff training and upskilling, and ensuring seamless integration of different technology systems. Implementing sustainable practices and investing in innovative technologies often requires significant financial resources. Greenknowe Farm may have faced challenges in securing funding or financing for its initiatives, particularly in the early stages when returns on investment may not have been immediate. Complying with agricultural regulations and policies can sometimes be challenging, especially when trying to implement new and innovative practices. Greenknowe Farm may have encountered hurdles in navigating the regulatory framework and ensuring that their innovative approaches were in line with existing guidelines. Adopting sustainable and innovative practices often requires the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. Greenknowe Farm may have faced challenges in accessing relevant training and expertise, and in ensuring that its staff had the necessary skills to effectively implement and manage the changes. Introducing sustainable farming practices and differentiating products in the marketplace can be challenging. Greenknowe Farm may have had to educate consumers about the benefits of their sustainable practices and build awareness of the added value of their products, which requires time, effort and effective marketing strategies.

Greenknowe Farm is committed to environmental stewardship. They actively implement measures to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote biodiversity conservation. The farm has embraced renewable energy solutions such as solar panels and wind turbines to power its operations sustainably. Through habitat restoration initiatives, the creation of wildlife corridors and sustainable water management, Greenknowe Farm has prioritised the protection and enhancement of local ecosystems. Their commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond the farm, as they actively work with neighbouring landowners and contribute to regional conservation efforts. Greenknowe Farm believes strongly in sharing knowledge and working with others in the farming community. They actively participate in industry events, host workshops and share their experiences to inspire and educate other farmers. By encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing, Greenknowe Farm contributes to the collective advancement of sustainable farming practices and acts as a catalyst for positive change within the industry.
