Staffing Community Trust

Staffin Community Trust have been the key drivers in the development of the affordable housing project in the small crofting village of Staffin on the Trotternish peninsula of North Skye. Staffin Community Trust have faced many challenges in developing their affordable housing project, from clearing the land, through the planning process, to finding a suitable contractor who was able to work within the financial remit of the tender. The Community Trust understood that there were varying needs for affordable housing in the village and surrounding area and were keen to be able to provide lifetime homes with a range of tenures to suit. Staffin Community Trust have worked hard to reverse the population decline in the village and their new affordable housing development has provided six families with a permanent, low energy, warm home. The Staffin Community Trust's affordable housing project has supported the community to enable families and young people to repopulate the only village in Skye and Lochalsh to have suffered a decline in population since the 1991 census. The Trust saw the affordable housing project as a way of increasing the population while providing the community with commercial units, workshops and a new building for the local health centre.
