Why standing charges are high and what you can do about them
Standing charges are a fixed fee that energy suppliers impose on your energy bill, which is separate from the unit price for the electricity or gas used. The purpose of a standing charge is to cover the energy supply’s cost, such as metering, maintenance, administration and infrastructure. Regardless of how much energy a business consumes, the energy supplier incurs these costs, which is set by the National Grid and Ofgem. The standing charge amount varies by supplier, meter type, business size and region.
Prior to April 22, the unit rate included the cost of transmission (TNUoS) and distribution (DUoS). However, these charges are no longer a residual cost in the unit rate. They are now a fixed charge factored into your standing charge, applicable to both commercial and domestic customers. Customers who have recently left fixed contracts may have noticed a significant increase in their standing charges. Conversely, those who are still within a fixed contract will not see these increases until it’s time to renew, which may come as a surprise.
