Scotland’s temperate rainforest is made up of native woodlands found on our west coast in the so-called 'hyper-oceanic zone', where levels of rainfall and relatively mild, year-round temperatures provide just the right conditions for some of the world’s rarest bryophytes and lichens.

These bryophytes and lichens are found in vast quantities on trees and boulders, in ravines and on the ground, and it's their sheer diversity that makes Scotland’s rainforest internationally important. We have some of the best remaining rainforest sites in Europe.

On this Walk and Talk we’ll be joined by Dr Oliver Moore, Lichen and Bryophyte Specialist (Scotland) for Plantlife at beautiful Argyll Estates in Inveraray. We'll be taking an in-depth look at some of the lichens and other species found in this environment, exploring the importance of them and learning about how best to manage temperate rainforest, as well as the specific combination of temperate rainforest alongside commercial forestry, as is the case at Argyll Estates.

After tea and coffee on arrival at the Argyll Estate’s Office we'll drive up to the first location via Glen Shira, where we'll hear from Dr Oliver Moore and find out more about land uses at Argyll Estates, including commercial forestry management alongside temperate rainforest.

We'll then work our way down the hill looking at the extensive range of species of lichens and bryophytes, being shown how to identify them and learning about their benefits.

We'll also be joined by Nathan Bryceland, Scottish Land & Estates Policy Adviser (Biodiversity and Woodlands) and there will be plenty of opportunity to network and ask questions.

We look forward to seeing you there.
