Farming Partners was created by a group of professional farmers who came together to farm on a number of dairy and heifer rearing farms in Scotland and Ireland. They currently operate 9 dairy farms with over 4,000 cows.

Farming Partners specialises in grass-based farming, growing as much green grass as possible and turning this grass into high quality milk from cows. Their calendar follows the grass growth curve. They calf their cows in the spring as grass starts to grow and dry their cows off around Christmas time.  They feed silage through the winter as the grass stops growing.

The milk produced is high in butter fat, is supplied to milk processors and generally commands premium prices.

The business model is a partnership-based approach where landowners become ‘partners’, similar to the New Zealand Share Farming system. The system works well for landholdings of over 200 acres, allowing the landowner to retain the land and share in the profits of the business without the day-to-day responsibilities.

On this Walk and Talk at Cumrue Farm, Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway DG11 1TL we will be informed about Farming Partner’s structure and the benefits of their grass-fed system, from the overall approach to the economics. We will discuss the features of the Farming Partners system:

  • How landowners and farm operators working together can produce better profitability.
  • Opportunities for young farmers to get into business.
  • Pros and cons of the grass-fed system.

Additional Details

Lunch: is not included, but you are welcome to bring along sandwiches and to stay on to chat / network at the end. Shelter is available in the event of wet weather.

Clothing: weather dependent. We will be outdoors so please dress appropriately with warm/waterproof clothing and footwear as required.
