THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. A NEW DATE WILL BE CONFIRMED SOON.

Join us at Bargany for a practical training session looking at the control of Rhododendron ponticum: the methods used and their results.

Bargany has been looked after by the Dalrymple-Hamiltons for nearly 400 years and is run predominantly as a mixed farming enterprise made up of a suckler cow herd, finished lamb business, forage crops and arable grains for own use. Shooting, fishing, stalking, a forestry business and holiday lets also operate alongside the farms.

Rhododendrons play a big part in how Bargany looks today, from ornamental to utilitarian. Historically, Rhododendron ponticum was used extensively as a shelter / cover for animals and game birds, but it is now taking over in many areas and control is needed for the health of the ground and woodland diversification. Several control methods have been tried in the past with varying successes and failures.

On this Walk and Talk we will be looking at previously treated areas, the methods used and the successes/failures alongside the response of the surrounding undergrowth and general impact.

Local firm Gregg Agri Agricultural Services carried out the mulching on site. We will see the equipment used and Mark Gregg will discuss the technique, plus we will visit the mulched site to look at the impact following the treatment method.

We will also visit a site that has been treated using stem injection, looking at the results achieved and the impact on the surrounding environment, and we will hear from Rob Dewar, INNS project officer for National Trust for Scotland. Rob carries out contract work and delivers training workshops alongside developing a Practice Guide for Forestry and Land Scotland to explain the use and the advantages of stem treatment. We will have a practical demonstration of the stem injection treatment followed by a Q&A.

Finally we'll enjoy a light lunch, networking opportunity and optional woodland walk through Bargany’s stunning gardens.

We hope to see you there.
