Press ReleaseScottish Land & Estates celebrates the immense contribution of Drew McFarlane-Slack at the Helping it Happen Awards 2024
Scottish Land & Estates (SLE) is delighted to announce that Drew McFarlane-Slack MBE has been awarded the prestigious Award for Outstanding Contribution to Rural Scotland as part of the annual Helping it Happen Awards.
This award recognises Drew’s exceptional influence and tireless efforts to support rural Scotland, particularly in the Highlands, where his expertise and passion have helped shape the region's present and future.
Drew's career is a testament to his deep commitment to the communities, landscapes, and people of rural Scotland. His collaborative and inclusive approach has led to notable advancements in land management, deer management groups, and the integration of academic and practical insights through initiatives like the Land Management Conference for UHI students, in which students spend time on an estate and receive insights directly from practitioners.
His efforts to increase the involvement of women and young people in the rural sector highlight his forward-thinking vision and dedication to ensuring that all voices are heard in shaping rural Scotland.
Sarah-Jane Laing, Chief Executive of SLE, said: "Drew has been a driving force behind so many initiatives that have had a positive impact on rural Scotland. His dedication, kindness, and inclusive approach have brought people together to work towards common goals, making an indelible mark on communities across the Highlands and beyond."
As a district and then Highland regional councillor in the 1990s and early 2000s, Drew was instrumental in ensuring that business and community voices were heard, pushing for greater innovation and a problem-solving approach to addressing economic downturns and outmigration.
As SLE's Regional Manager for the Highlands from 2007 to 2018, Drew was instrumental in raising the profile of the organisation and safeguarding the interests of its members. He was also pivotal in the establishment of the Helping it Happen Awards itself, playing a crucial role in engaging Highland members from the very start.
Since retiring from that role, Drew has continued to champion rural Scotland, using his vast knowledge and influence to promote the work of SLE members, particularly through social media, where he tirelessly shares the successes and achievements of the rural community.
Drew’s leadership extends across various sectors, including affordable housing, community-led development, and conservation efforts within the Cairngorms National Park. His longstanding involvement with Leader Local Action Groups and his international work with Euromontana further demonstrate his dedication to sustainable rural development.
He has also played a pivotal role in resolving conflicts within deer management groups (DMGs) and forming effective DMGs that are now collaborating on landscape-scale projects, including peatland restoration.
In addition to his professional achievements, Drew’s personal contributions to his community are equally remarkable. Whether appearing in local pantomimes or working alongside his wife, Christine, and daughter, Katie, he embodies the spirit of rural Scotland – one of resilience, generosity, and community.
This award is a fitting tribute to a man who has done so much for rural Scotland, and whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
