SLE appoints Sara Ward and Neil Johnstone as operations expand

Rural business organisation Scottish Land & Estates (SLE) has appointed Sara Ward and Neil Johnstone to support its growing range of services to members.

Sara Ward has been appointed as events and membership services co-ordinator while Neil Johnstone joins SLE as digital and marketing officer.

Stephen Young, director of policy for SLE, said: “Sara and Neil bring valuable experience and understanding of the rural sector, which will be of great benefit as we continue to increase our engagement with partners, as well as expanding the services we provide for our members.

“Rural businesses across Scotland are providing homes for families, improving the environment and creating tens of thousands of jobs, safeguarding the future of rural communities. These appointments reinforce our commitment to supporting them as they do so.”

Sara, originally from Fife, is now based in Edinburgh. Before joining SLE, Sara worked in the hotel sector, overseeing a wide range of conferences and events. She has also held roles at Edinburgh Castle and the Edinburgh and Banff Mountain Film Festivals. 

Neil joins SLE from the Edinburgh Evening News, where he was a digital reporter. He has a master’s degree in journalism, and experience in multimedia content creation, digital strategy, reputation management and audience growth.

Commenting on his appointment, Neil said: “I am looking forward to supporting SLE in strengthening its digital presence and promoting the superb work of its members across rural Scotland.”

Sara Ward said: “The success of rural businesses in supporting the economy and enhancing the environment demonstrates just how much can be achieved through collaboration and constructive partnerships. I am delighted to join SLE and to support this vital work.” 

Scottish Land & Estates is this year marking 10 years of the Helping It Happen awards, the pre-eminent awards scheme for the people, businesses and community projects powering rural Scotland. A major new Rural Champion Award has been announced – with a £10,000 prize courtesy of The Royal Countryside Fund, which will be awarded to an individual going above and beyond for their community.
