Furlough scheme extended

The Chancellor has announced that the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme will remain open until the end of October 2020. Furloughed workers across the UK will continue to receive 80% of their current salary, up to £2,500. New flexibility will be introduced from August to get employees back to work and boost the economy.

Parental & adoption leave 

Workers on the Job Retention Scheme who are planning to take paid parental or adoption leave will be entitled to pay based on their usual earnings rather than a furloughed pay rate.  HMRC has the scheme up and running, and it is now open for applications from employers.  Further information on the scheme can be found here.

Furlough scheme cut-off date extended to 19 March

The government has announced that the eligibility cut-off date for Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been extended to 19 March 2020 from the original cut-off date of 28 February 2020. The change will mean thousands more workers can be furloughed. The scheme expected to be fully operational next week.​​​​​​

Chancellor announces a new self-employed income support scheme

The government will pay self-employed people who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus a taxable grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the last three years up to £2,500 a month. This scheme will be open to people across the UK for at least three months and the chancellor is willing to extend it for longer if necessary. People will be able to claim these grants and continue to do business. The government is covering the same amount of income for a self-employed person as furloughed employees.

Government's Job Retention Scheme

The UK government has published information its Job Retention Scheme. The UK Government will also cover the cost of National Insurance and pension contributions. Employer contributions for furloughed staff will be paid by the UK Government on top of 80 per cent of salary costs. This could save businesses an extra £300 a month for each employee under the scheme.

    The UK Government announced in the budget that small and medium-sized businesses and employers would be allowed to reclaim SSP paid for sickness absence due to COVID-19.

    Proof in relation to employee self-isolation

    It remains to be seen how easy it will be for employees to obtain written evidence amidst the coronavirus outbreak. The government has stated: "We strongly suggest that employers use their discretion around the need for medical evidence for a period of absence where an employee is advised to stay at home due to suspected COVID-19, in accordance with the public health advice being issued by the government."
